GPS Surveys & GPS Control Installation

Total Surveys first invested in GPS technology approximately 10 years ago, and have regularly upgraded this equipment since; to stay up-to-date with the technology. With the latest functionality, our surveyors are able to install co-ordinated control and carry out GPS survey work, faster and more efficiently than ever.

GPS in useThe range of GPS tasks undertaken varies considerably; from purely using base stations to co-ordinate the survey stations for a traditional topographical survey project, to "roving" across vast areas of land giving instant 3D co-ordinate data across the site terrain.

Projects have included large areas of green field sites for, wind farms, pipeline routes, development projects and road schemes.

The company utilises the latest Leica equipment. This equipment has RTK (Real Time Kinematic) capability; which enables our surveyors to obtain 3D co-ordinates in real-time, after establishing control using Ordnance Survey RINEX data. We also have a GSM phone link capability with the GPS kit (as opposed to the standard relatively weak radio modem link), which significantly increases the operating range; this can give a working radius in the order of up to 30km from the base station, which saves a considerable amount of time when establishing control for large sites. Surveys can be related to Ordnance Datum and National Grid co-ordinates, by utilising this equipment.

Leica 1200 GPS equipmentWe have also recently invested in Leica “Smartnet” GPS equipment, which gives immediate real time co-ordinates by utilising the Ordnance Survey Active GPS Network.

Total Surveys have installed major control networks for the Environment Agency using GPS equipment. An example includes the installation of E2 & E3 reference control stations throughout the South West area. In this case a report document was provided together with a co-ordinated witness diagram (pro forma) document for each control station established. These are held in the Environment Agency’s database as GPS reference stations that can be used for future survey projects.
